ISWALD

AFTER

In addition, we made an innovative decision to construct the new roof atop the existing structure. This approach not only added architectural appeal but also symbolized a transformation from despair to resilience. The beautiful raw wood of the original roof now adds a cozy, rustic charm to the now sophisticated, modern kitchen.

Today, the house stands as a beacon of hope and ingenuity, where echoes of the past harmonize with aspirations for the future. Although all of our projects are approached from the genuine desire to honor a home’s personal story and lineage, this one was particularly special. We didn’t bury its history by making it unrecognizable as so many renovations do, but instead proved that old or neglected spaces still have an abundance of beauty within them to share.

BEFORE

Despite the challenging circumstances of a prior inhabitant's neglect, we undertook the task of salvaging and restoring as many of this home’s original elements as possible while simultaneously updating and brightening it up.

To start, there were many structural issues, including holes in the roof, and no working electricity or plumbing. The structure that we began with was severely dilapidated with broken windows and rotting walls. We completely overhauled the inside and outside to reinforce the foundation and provide a strong, energy-efficient shelter.

Because the team at Design Craft values restoration and recycling as a practice, both as a way to retain a space’s original integrity and to cut cost for our clients where possible, we strive to save as much material from the original structure as possible. Through meticulous efforts, we successfully preserved aged beams from the wreckage, repurposing them to create a distinctive fireplace mantel. These reclaimed beams now serve as a captivating centerpiece, embodying the home's history while embracing its future potential.
